AMERICAN RED CROSS WATERFRONT SKILLS MODULE (LIFEGUARDING) COURSE (WF Skills)

Online Component Required?

No. Not applicable.

Purpose/Overview:

The purpose of the Waterfront Skills module is to teach lifeguards the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to emergencies in nonsurf, open-water areas found at public parks, resorts, summer camps and campgrounds. The instructor-led classroom session takes approximately 6 hours to complete.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Age Requirement: Must be a minimum of 15 years old (by last day of course)

Pre-course Session Swimming Assessment/Skills Evaluation: (Must pass pre-course assessment to continue in the course.)

  1. Distance Swim: Swim 550 yards, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
  2. Swim-Tread-Swim: Swim 500 yards (front crawl/breaststroke), tread water for 2 minutes (legs only), then swim 50 yards (front crawl/breaststroke).
  3. Dive Brick Retrieval: Swim 20 yards, dive 7–10 feet to retrieve a 10-lb brick, and swim it back to the starting side within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
  4. Dive Ring Retrieval: Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4 to 7 feet of water, resurface and continue to swim another 5 yards to complete the skill sequence.

Requirements for Certification:

  • Actively participate in all course activities, including assuming various roles during scenarios.

  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills and scenarios.

  • Successfully pass the final written exam with a minimum grade of 80%.

Certification Earned and Validity Period:

  • Successful candidates will receive an American Red Cross certificate in Waterfront Skills, which is valid for 2 years ONLY VALID when accompanied by a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certificate.

 

US Powerboating Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling (ASPH 2 - Wed 6/17 9:00AM - 6:30PM)

US POWERBOATING SAFE POWERBOAT HANDLING COURSE (ASPH)

Driver Education for Boaters! 

Purpose/Overview:

This full day, on-the-water course is for anyone who has taken a classroom boater safety course but needs practical, hands-on experience learning to safely operate a small powerboat and improve their boathandling skills.

     On-the-Water Sessions:

  • Engine & electrical systems
  • Starting procedures
  • DockingLeaving & returning to a slip
  • Close-quarters maneuvers
  • Anchoring
  • Steering a range
  • Proceeding to a destination
  • Person in Water rescue

     Classroom Sessions:

  • Safety, prep & weather briefings
  • Maneuvering concepts

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Recommended Age: 10–adult (may be affected by state minimum age)
  • Safe Boater Certificate: All participants are expected to show a valid state safe boater certificate on the day of the course.  This certificate is required of all powerboat operators in New York State.  A free online course sponsored by the Boat US Foundation can be found at the URL:

Requirements for Certification:

  • Participation:  Must actively participate in all course activities.
  • Practical Skills:  Must demonstrate required practical boat handling skills at the level of the course standards.  
  • Written Challenge Exam: Must pass the written challenge exam with an 80% or higher score. Students will be expected to challenge and pass a written exam covering topics including coast guard required equipment, rules of the road, aids to navigation, preparation, environmental regulations, safety, and emergencies.

Certification Earned and Validity Period:

Successful candidates will earn the US Sailing/US Powerboating Safe Powerboat Handling certification, which does not expire.

AMERICAN RED CROSS LIFEGUARDING RECERTIFICATION COURSE - BLENDED LEARNING (LG Recert)

Online Component Required?

Yes. This class is taught in a blended learning format and the assigned online session must be completed prior to the instructor-led session. The online session includes skill lessons and skills demonstration videos and features adaptive learning, in which participants can test out of the online content they already know, allowing each participant a tailored individual experience and ensuring all learners enter the instructor-led session with the knowledge they need to be successful.  The online session for the course takes up to 2 hours, 30 minutes to complete.

Purpose/Overview:

The Lifeguarding Recertification course is designed to refresh your knowledge and skills. Upon successful completion, you will renew your certification for another two years. The instructor-led classroom session takes approximately 8 hours to complete.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Age Requirement: Must be a minimum of 15 years old
  • Certification Requirement: Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification (...or certification expired by no more than 30 days)

Pre-course Session Swimming Assessment/Skills Evaluation: (Failure to pass pre-course assessment will prevent continuation in the course.)

  • Swim-Tread-Swim: Swim 150 yards (front crawl/breaststroke), tread water for 2 minutes (legs only), then swim 50 yards (front crawl/breaststroke).

This Course is Appropriate for:

  • Lifeguards
  • EMTs/Paramedics
  • Firefighters
  • Law Enforcement
  • Health care professionals

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Age Requirement: No specific age requirement for this course
  • Physical Capability: Participants must be physically capable of performing high-quality CPR, including chest compressions and ventilations, regardless of age.

Requirements for Certification:

  • Online Component: Must complete the online component (prior to the instructor-led session)
  • Course Activities: Must participate in all course activities
  • Skills and Scenarios: Must successfully demonstrate all required skills and scenarios
  • Written Test: Must pass the written test with a score of 80% or more

Certification Earned and Validity Period:
